Overberg Disaster team worried about 2 district hotspots
17 June 2020: The number of positive Coronavirus cases has risen rapidly in the Overberg in recent days. There are now 565 positive cases in the district – an increase of 68 in just one day.
The Overberg Disaster Management team is particularly worried about two hotspots here: Zwelihle in the Overstrand Municipality and Grabouw in the Theewaterskloof Municipality.
As of today (17 June), there are a total of 140 positive cases in Zwelihle (95 are active). In Grabouw, a total of 131 people have tested positive for COVID-19, with 75 of these active.
What’s more, the Overstrand recorded its first deaths today – including loss of life in Gansbaai and in Mount Pleasant. That brings the total number of deaths in the Overberg to 10.
According to Reinard Geldenhuys, Disaster Manager in the Overberg District, the team on the frontline fighting the COVID-19 pandemic are working harder than ever to protect Overberg residents. “The Department of Health, our district and local municipalities and the SAPS are making every possible effort to stop the spread. But we must have the support of our residents if we’re to halt the Coronavirus.”
Geldenhuys says it’s vital that all residents adhere to the rules and guidelines to protect themselves and those around them. “When you leave your home, you must wear your mask. This is one of the best ways to halt the spread.” Residents should stick to social distancing norms in the public, and should sanitise their hands frequently, as per the guidelines set out by the Department of Health (using either an alcohol-based sanitizer, or by washing with soap and running water).
The Disaster Management team has raised its concern for the Overberg elderly and for those with chronic illnesses who are likely to be more vulnerable to COVID-19. “That’s why we advise you to remain home as much as possible, to protect these individuals. And to ensure these individuals also remain home, to protect themselves.”
He adds, “It’s never been more important for us to look after our own health, and the health of our fellow residents. It’s up to each one of us to act responsibly now.
